They could feel the lightness in their heads as they listened to the tale of the Magdaer. They had heard many stories about it but figured that most were a myth. From what they were hearing they were far from mythical. The legend told of a blade that both destroyed and saved Tyria from the tyranny of the Charr.
“Listen carefully heroes. I have discovered that the Magdaer is not lost, but is hidden deep in the Ascalonian Catacombs. The journey into the catacombs itself will be gravely dangerous with enemy in the form of the spirits of Ascalon outnumbering you 10 to one or more. You will need to travel through part of the Shiverpeaks then on through Ascalon to the Plains of Ashford. The Charr will be everywhere and it will be difficult to know which ones are with the resistance and which ones aren’t. You will need to use all your knowledge and skills and work closely together to survive … if you can.”
Suddenly a flash filled the room and before them stood a Sylvari bearing the Legendary Kudzu Longbow and Twilight, the Legendary Greatsword capable of taking down small armies.
“My apologies” Ruqi said “I failed to inform you that the Mother Tree insisted on sending her best Ranger to assist the two of you on this task.” “Let me introduce you to Vision of the Pale Tree. She was not just born from the Mother Tree like most Sylvari, Vision was created by the Mother Tree from her own limbs and thoughts. Using ancient magics she forged an image of herself in humanoid form and instilled her with great insight and power. Her quiver never empties and her arrows are straight and true. The truest known to all Sylvari.”
There will be one more hero joining you that will meet you along the way. I will tell you her story after you have had a good rest.
The Blackgate Army, having overrun Borlis Pass, now marches upon the rest of Tyria.
With the Borlis military in disarray, and three of its champions off in search of magical weapons, and one of its commanders forced to rely on skritt while split from the rest of the remnant army, Imperator Pyrax's plan had gone through the Ash Legion as well. Under mysterious circumstances, he had gained the support of enough elements in that last legion to become Khan-Ur of a unified charr empire. Pyrax's troops had already taken to the Shiverpeaks to fight the mist-spawned forces we knew only as Blackgate. The residents of the greater Shiverpeak region are now caught between slavery in the hands of the charr, and certain death at the hands of Blackgate.
As expected, the Arcane Council was thrown into disarray at the suggestion that the rogue Legions would serve as better military protectors than either the survivors of Borlis or the Pact could, and infiltrators from the Ash Legion had taken the entire council of Rata Sum hostage, as more charr came through the asura gates to "protect" the city and surrounding provinces. With charr control of the asura gates, alarm spread through Ascalon and Kryta, as Ebonhawke could not hope to withstand a full-scale siege without its lifeline to Divinity's Reach.
Ruqi's laboratory, essentially a diplomatic mission for the Mist Warriors in Rata Sum, suddenly had some very huge, very brutish, very furry visitors. Their demand? Sohothin, for their big new magical war machine.
With the sudden appearance of the rogue charr warriors in her Lab Ruqi looked up, not batting an eye. They spit and growled their demands and threatened to tear her limbs off one by one if she didn't give them what they wanted.
"Hello Gentlemen", Ruqi smiled. "What you are looking for can be obtained with this special device I have created." "I'm happy that finally some heroes have arrived that will be able to handle this great power!".. then Ruqi held out the device and bent on one little knee. Smiling to herself as she heard the Charr mumbling happily amongst themselves about how they outsmarted the Asurans.
"All you have to do is turn that dial to the right one click, then press the button on the left side and the Sohothin will be yours."
As expected the commander of the group did as she suggested without question. "AH!" Ruqi said out loud... as the device dropped to the floor and her lab was free of the gross hairy beasts. The volcano they appeared in though only had to deal with them for a few seconds before they became wisps of smoke..
Quickly accessing her console she first sealed off the lab with powerful magic, then surrounded it with a barrier rendering it invisible. She would not be found again.
-- A week before this latest attack happened our heroes set out on their journey. What follows next is some background and a description of their journey to find the Magdaer.
As the Charr work their way across Tyria enslaving everyone and everything they come across, hope begins to fade. They seem impossible to defeat and the magics of old appear to be impossibly hidden.
What is the Sohothin? Who is Shamira? How can the Magdaer be used to save Tyria? Will it wipe out almost all life as it did in the past? Will Tyria really become ruled by the Charr? How will our heroes survive the catacombs in Ascalon and bring the Magdaer to the place it needs to be to rid Tyria of this evil threat once and for all?
These answers and more coming soon.
Over the next week or so I will be working on answers to the above questions. As the pieces come together on 'paper' I will insert them here when they're ready, bit by bit. Keep coming back residents of Borlis Pass.
I know it looks grim right now but in all things there must always be faith and hope. All beings have an inner power that most don't know about. It's time to use that power now. Lay down tonight Borlis... lay down and send all of your thoughts of healing and energy to the heroes on their most epic of journeys. This will help them in ways you can only imagine.
Distant tidings, disturbing tidings, have reached the lands of Elona. Supposedly, all the villains that King Joko would have slain if he were alive have resurfaced in his absence. Now, without such a great hero to protect the world, only one city far to the north is in the way of whatever is coming.
With more and more of Tyria being enslaved and oppressed by an army of beasts, the citadel of Ebonhawke is the last thing standing in its way to prevent them from reaching Amnoon. Word is that the evil Sunspears have headed north, all the better for what little security we have left in Joko's absence. Supposedly, they have gone up to slaughter all the Ascalonians. People in Kourna seem to think they are going to reinforce the pass to Tyria instead. The conflicting rumors in these troubling times are uncertain.
A lone scout, intent on stealing a strategic defense map, had gone to a meeting of the Blackgate War Council, uninvited. The horrors beneath had come to meet in the occupied citadel. Marching in double-time through the asura gates was the most horrific, enormous, giant swarm of soldiers, appearing as if they were normal from that distance. For them, those portals led to the great Frostgorge, and more particularly to the Borlis mainland back in Tyria.
...Gods, I'm the only one... the defense of the Mists has been lost. The war in Tyria has probably already begun...
The Blackgate War Council had, in its triumph, set to meet in a crumbling manor house, covered with the scars and burns of war. Under cover of stealth, the Borlisian scout had snuck into the grand dining room, in which was laid a giant war map in place of the usual wares of silver. She was in a position to assassinate one of them.
